First, Hydrangea is a genus of shrubs and trees belonging to the Hydrangeaceae family. Its best-known species is a hybrid species, called Hydrangea ×serratophylla, obtained by crossing. The horticultural plants known as “Hydrangeas” are distinguished from plants from nature by their inflorescences composed of almost all sterile flowers, the whole of which forms a ball or a half-ball. Hydrangeas belong either to the hybrid species Hydrangea × serratophylla or to the species Hydrangea macrophylla. By extension, species of the genus Hydrangea are often referred to as “Hydrangea” followed by a qualifier, such as “climbing hydrangea” for Hydrangea anomala. The name “Hydrangea” has no botanical value, it is a purely horticultural name.
