The red panda, also called small panda, is a mammal in the Ailuridae family in danger of extinction. Native to the Himalayas and southwestern China, the red panda is typically found in temperate mixed mountain forests that are rich in bamboo. Its fur is reddish brown, it has a long shaggy tail and is about the size of a cat. Mostly solitary, it is active from dusk to dawn, and is considered sedentary.
Even though it is named panda, it is not in the same family as the giant panda. It should rather be classified in the musteloid superfamily which includes the weasel, the raccoon and the skunk. Traditionally, biologists thought it had two subspecies.
