First, in zoology, the term whale refers to certain large marine mammals classified in the order Cetacea.
It is a generic term that applies to species belonging to the suborder Mysticeti, the baleen whales as well as, improperly, to certain species belonging to the odontocetes, the toothed whales.

In everyday language, it is a generic term that does not generally refer to a particular scientific category other than that of cetaceans. To be more precise, it should only be used to refer to mysticeti, the baleen whales. But it is also used for the sperm whale as well as for other toothed whales.
