Mushrooms have been present on the earth for 450 million years. They are found in almost all environments, both terrestrial and aquatic. The first fungi would have helped plants to colonize the land.
The term “mushroom” refers to a fleshy living organism, generally consisting of a foot surmounted by a hat. In the first documentary sources, mushrooms would have attracted man as much for their edible properties as for their hallucinogenic properties. On the other hand, the toxicities also frightened them. The classification of mushrooms as a plant comes from the Greeks and this lasted until the 20th century.
