Sagittarius (this term means “the Archer”) is a constellation of the zodiac crossed by the Sun from December 18 to January 18. The constellation lies between Ophiuchus in the west and Capricorn in the east. Sagittarius was one of the48 constellations identified by Ptolemy.
Sagittarius also designates a sign of the zodiac corresponding to the 30° sector of the ecliptic crossed by the Sun from November 23 to December 21. It is in this sense that it is used to identify planetary movements, still used in astrology.
In Greek mythology, Sagittarius would represent the centaur Pholos, although some sources associate it rather with Crotos or even with Chiron (himself associated with the constellation of Centaur); he would be aiming the Scorpion with his bow.
