Extraterrestrial life (extra, in the sense of the Latin “outside, outside”) designates any hypothetical form of life present elsewhere than on planet Earth.
Evidence of extraterrestrial life is an active research topic. Various space exploration programs seek by sending probes to the other planets of the solar system and their satellites to highlight traces of primitive or fossil life. Exobiology, studies in an interdisciplinary way the factors and processes, having led to the appearance of life on Earth, extrapolating the extraterrestrial conditions which could lead to this phenomenon. Some powerful radio-astronomical observatories are used within international projects, such as SETI, to try to highlight artefacts of evolved and intelligent forms of extraterrestrial life. To date, no observational element of extraterrestrial life has been recognized by the scientific community.
The current or past presence of intelligent extraterrestrial beings on Earth is considered by many authors considered pseudo-scientific, whether as part of the extraterrestrial hypothesis of the origin of UFOs from the ancient astronaut theory to explain the geoglyphs of Nazca and the pyramids of Egypt or the Ummo theory to justify certain technological advances. The doctrine of the Raelian movement is based on an alleged contact with highly intelligent extraterrestrials at the origin of life on earth.
