First, the word cat comes from the verb cattare, which means to watch. This term defines well the feline which at the beginning was considered as a hunter watching his prey. In classical Latin we speak of felis, hence, in French the term feline to designate a cat, but the reality is that this word only designates the wild cat, it is rather the term cattus which applies to the domestic cat.

In the domestic cat, the male is called a cat, the female a cat and the young is called a kitten. We also designate in colloquial language the cat by kitty.
