First, A jack-o’-lantern (or pumpkin-lantern) is a lantern made from a hollowed-out turnip or pumpkin in which a face, often grimacing, has been cut out.
Besides, Jack is probably the most popular character associated with the Halloween party. He comes from an old Irish tale and is said to have been a blacksmith, avaricious, drunken, wicked and self-absorbed. An author gives a detailed version in the Dublin Penny Journal (1835).
One evening, while he was in a tavern, Jack upsets the Devil. The latter, as usual, tries to convince Jack to leave his soul to him in exchange for diabolical favors. On the verge of succumbing, Jack then asks the Devil to offer him a last drink before he accepts the pact. The Devil then turns into a sixpence piece in order to pay the innkeeper. Quickly, Jack grabs the coin and slips it into his purse. However, this contains a silver cross: the Devil, unable to transform himself again, is a prisoner in the form of this small piece. Jack then obtained from the Evil One that he did not come to claim his soul before ten years had passed, which the Devil accepted.
