First, A snowman is a compact snow sculpture, with a human appearance, and of very variable dimensions, made up of 3 distinct parts. Like the sandcastle, the snowman belongs to the category of ephemeral art. It is usually made using two or three snowballs of varying sizes.

The first written occurrences attesting to the existence of snowmen date from the sixteenth century (for example in Shakespeare). The popular character then appears in a collection of nursery rhymes in 1770, in Leipzig. It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that the snowman was associated with the end-of-year celebrations, and became a figurine of the Christmas tree.
