First, Mulan is an American film directed by Niki Caro, released in 2020. This is a live-action remake of the 1998 Disney animated film Mulan. The latter is inspired by the legendary Chinese character, Hua Mulan. The film is part of Walt Disney Pictures’ desire to adapt its animated films into live action films, such as The Jungle Book (2016), Beauty and the Beast (2017), Aladdin (2019), or even Dumbo (2019).
In addition, it is also an opportunity for Disney to experiment with a radical change in strategy by canceling, in a context marked by the Covid-19 pandemic and the migration of its activities to its Disney+ platform, a theatrical release planned long-standing where its video-on-demand services are available.
