First, Russian dolls or matryoshkas (Russian: матрёшка, plural матрёшки matryoshki) are series of dolls of decreasing sizes placed one inside the other. The word matryoshka is derived from the feminine given name Matriona, traditionally associated with a robust and generously shaped Russian country woman, given the same etymology as мать (“mother”) and матрона (“matron”). We also sometimes speak of a nesting doll, in reference to the puppet of the Mother Gigogne, which represents a tall and strong woman surrounded by children.
