First, The Faun is a legendary creature from Roman mythology. He is close to the satyrs of Greek mythology.
Among the Romans, the fauns and the sylvans were, admittedly with a few differences, what the egipans and the satyrs (in fact, men-goats) were among the Greeks. Rustic gods, with a happier face, and above all with less brutality in their loves. (Which is actually a fantasy of the city-dwelling Greeks, real satyrs being closer to fauns according to Euripides’ verses.) The pine and the wild olive were dedicated to them.
