First, the mustang is a wild horse from the American Northwest. All mustangs are the descendants of domestic horses returned to the wild state due to the phenomenon of marooning. Their most distant ancestors come from Spanish horses brought by the conquistadors during the conquest of America and returned to the wild after having run away or having been released. Herds have gradually grown over the centuries for the same reasons, with some breeders even releasing domesticated horses into the midst of the herds in order to select and take the most interesting foals.
Mustangs present a great variety of morphology as well as coats. Very resistant and extremely frugal, they live in family herds. These herds vary in size. Each group is protected by a single stallion and includes several mares, their foals of the year, as well as young males and females from previous years. Adult mustangs have few natural predators. Their presence and their movements are therefore controversial, their impact on the environment being regularly pointed out. Their supporters argue that mustangs are part of the natural heritage of the American West, while their opponents argue that they degrade pasture and compete with livestock and wildlife for forage.
