First, Cleopatra VII Philopator, “Who loves her father”, then Théa Néôtera Philopatris, “New Goddess who loves her homeland” (in ancient Greek: Θεὰ Νεωτέρα Φιλοπάτριϛ), is a queen of ancient Egypt of the Lagide dynasty born around – 69 and died on August 12, 30 BC. J.-C.
She reigned over Egypt between -51 and -30 with her brother-husbands Ptolemy XIII and Ptolemy XIV, then alongside the Roman general Marc Antoine. She is famous for having been the companion of Jules César then of Marc Antoine, with whom she had several children. Stakeholder in the civil war between Marc Antoine and Octave, she was defeated at the battle of Actium in -31. His defeat will allow the Romans to complete the conquest of Egypt, an event that will mark the end of the Hellenistic era.
Cleopatra is a character whose legend took hold during her very lifetime. Her tragic death has only added to the romance that surrounds her and can, for this reason, harm an objective approach to the one who was one of the most famous women of antiquity.
