First, Loup is a term belonging to the current vocabulary of French. This derbuer does not correspond to a precise level of the scientific classification of species. It is indeed an ambiguous word that designates several species and many subspecies of mammals of the Canidae family, a family that also includes jackals, foxes, etc. In general wolf refers to the common gray wolf (Canis lupus) – this being the best known and most widely distributed in the world. But wolves are not limited to this species, which over time also gave rise to the dog and the dingo. Apart from this Gray Wolf, there are indeed other species of wolves among the Canids, most of which are threatened with extinction and/or protected in the 21st century.

In Europe, the common gray wolf (Canis lupus lupus) is the only subspecies present almost everywhere on this continent, except in Russia, where two other subspecies also live, the Russian wolf (Canis lupus communis) and the Siberian wolf (Canis lupus albus).

In North America there are other subspecies of the gray wolf, such as the Canadian wolf (Canis lupus occidentalis) or the Arctic wolf (Canis lupus arctos), but also the eastern wolf (Canis lycaon) or the red wolf (Canis rufus).
