First, an alphabet (from alpha and beta, the first two letters of the Greek alphabet, derived from the Phoenician alphabet) is a set of symbols intended to more or less accurately represent the phonemes of a language.
In addition, each of these symbols, or graphemes, is also called a “letter”. In the simplest cases each letter corresponds to a phoneme of the language and vice versa. Some letters can receive one or more diacritics in order to extend the stock of graphemes if this is insufficient to note the sounds of the language or to avoid ambiguities. In the same way, an alphabet can be extended by the use of digraphs or additional letters.
Second, since the phonetic evolution of a language occurs at a different rate from written evolution, alphabetic writing in no way guarantees a one-to-one correspondence between phonemes and graphemes. Thus in French, /s/ is also noted c, ç, s, ss, sc or ti. Conversely, s can be pronounced /s/, /z/ or be silent. Moreover, French even includes non-homophone homographs as in the sentence “The wind is in the east”. Some languages, such as Esperanto, have a completely phonetic script.
