First, the Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) is the most widely distributed species of flamingo. Formerly, pink flamingo designated the species Phoenicopterus ruber, whose species here was the subspecies Phoenicopterus ruber roseus. Since the subspecies became a species in its own right, it took on the standardized name of flamingo, and the species Phoenicopterus ruber became the Cuban flamingo or Caribbean flamingo.

Flamingo food consists mainly of aquatic invertebrates, as well as their larvae and eggs. A large number of taxa are concerned, and we find in particular crustaceans (including artemia rich in carotenes, which contribute to the pink coloring of the plumage), molluscs, insects (adults and larvae, such as chironomids), worms, fish, algae, etc. Flamingos may also consume seeds of aquatic plants and rice (inducing conflicts with rice farmers).

The flamingo practices the filtration of water and mud to feed, thanks to a particular beak, equipped with slats functioning in the manner of whalebone.
