Delicious free sweets by Marie Claude Fontaine.
First, A cupcake (Anglicism), small cake or fairy cake, “fairy cake” is a small cake of American origin. Often very colorful, served in individual portions, in the shape of a muffin, baked in a paper mold and generally covered with icing and sometimes decorated.
Moreover, it was in the 1950s that the cupcake became a very popular cake, it was originally the housewives’ cake. For some, its name would come from the unit of measurement cup (cup in English).
Secondly, another explanation would come more from the container than from the content. Indeed, when the molds did not exist, the cakes were cooked in individual terracotta pots, a kind of ramekin. The name “fairy cake” comes from the imaginative explanation of its size: it would correspond to the portion of a fairy.
Very popular in the 1950s, the cupcake was made for all kinds of occasions, birthday parties, Halloween, Thanksgiving or even Christmas. Then it lost all appeal until the early 2000s and its appearance on the TV series Sex and the City.
