Firstly, The Nutcracker is a magical ballet by Piotr Ilitch Tchaikovsky in two acts, that is three tableaux and 15 scenes. The latter was presented for the first time on December 18, 1892 at the Mariinsky Theater in Saint Petersburg under the direction of Riccardo Drigo and choreographed by Lev Ivanov.
The libretto by Ivan Vsevolojski and Marius Petipa is inspired by Alexandre Dumas’ version of a tale by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann: Nußknacker und Mäusekönig (The Nutcracker and the Mouse King). The music, entrusted to Tchaikovsky and composed from February 1891 to March 1892, is certainly one of the most popular ballet music today and one of Tchaikovsky’s most appreciated works.
Moreover, The Nutcracker has become, since its creation in December 1892, a true musical symbol. On Christmas Eve, Clara receives a nutcracker from her uncle and during the night, a wonderful fairyland begins. Downstairs in the living room, the toys come to life and the nutcracker turns into a prince…
