American football is a team sport between two teams of eleven players. Both teams alternate between defense and attack. The object of the game is to score points by carrying or throwing the ball into the opponent’s end zone. To retain possession, the attacking team must cover at least 10 yards in 4 attempts (called “down”). During this time, the defending team must prevent the attack from reaching this objective, in order to regain possession of the ball. If the attacking team validates 10 yards or more during its possession, it benefits from four new attempts to continue gaining ground. Otherwise, possession of the ball changes sides, and the roles (defense/attack) are reversed.
In the United States and Canada (including Quebec), this sport is known simply as football.
