The horse is a leading example of the theory of evolution. Many fossils have been found, the oldest of which date back 60 million years. These show that the horse descended from a small forest mammal with several toes, which then adapted to the plains and steppes by becoming larger. The culmination is the Pleistocene Equus, measuring about 1.40 m and moving on four hooves. A genetic study carried out on a fragment of horse bone approximately 735,000 years old has made it possible to date the appearance of the common ancestor of all modern Equidae to four million years.
