Free coloring, stained glass pattern of triangles
In Euclidean geometry, a triangle is a plane figure, formed by three points called vertices, by the three segments that connect them, called sides, delimiting an area of the plane called interior. When the vertices are distinct two by two, in each vertex the sides delimit an interior angle, from which comes the denomination of “triangle”.
The triangle is also the simplest polygon which delimits a portion of the plane and thus serves as a fundamental element for cutting and approximating surfaces.
Many geometric constructions of points, straight lines and circles associated with a triangle are linked by properties which were largely already stated in Euclid’s Elements, nearly 300 years BC. The relations between the measures of the angles and the lengths of the sides are in particular at the origin of techniques for calculating distances by triangulation. The development of these techniques also constitutes a branch of mathematics called trigonometry.
