Suicide (from the Latin suicidium, from the words sui: “self” and caedere “to kill”) is the deliberate act of ending one’s own life. Suicide is often committed out of desperation, a cause that can be attributed to a mental disorder such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, alcoholism or substance abuse. Stress factors such as financial problems or problems in human relationships often play a significant role as well.
Each year, more than a million people commit suicide. The World Health Organization (WHO) ranks suicide as the thirteenth most common cause of death worldwide3 and the National Safety Council ranks it the sixth most common cause in the United States. Suicide is the leading cause of death among adolescents and adults under the age of 35. The prevalence of suicide is three to four times higher in men than in women. Failed suicide attempts worldwide are estimated at between 10 and 20 million each year.
The question of suicide intersects with the domains of religion, honor and the meaning of life. Abrahamic religions consider suicide an offense against God. In the medical field, assisted suicide and euthanasia are currently controversial topics. The characteristics that define these two suicidal means include patients in the terminal phase of an illness, who suffer excruciatingly, and those who are generally physically and mentally impaired (consequences of an accident or an illness).
